2 Common Situations that Bring People into Therapy
Scenario #1- Didn’t She Used to Like Sex?
You love your wife, you really do, but for a long time you have felt like your life was missing something. You are happy and when you survey your life you find that you really have nothing to complain about, except…….. Sex. You call it many names and try to find ways to let your wife know that all is not how “it used to be” and you miss that.
She may or may not respond to your needs and little by little you find yourself resenting the fact that while she seems perfectly fine with the level of sexual intimacy that is present, it is not enough for you. You seem to always be the one who initiates any sexual encounter, you try to find out what will please her, you try to be more romantic, more seductive and at times, even more demanding, but nothing really changes.
You feel rejected by your partner and are lonely. You look around to see if other men are feeling the same thing, but it is not something the men you know talk about seriously. You feel like you are the only man you know who is caught up in the “good marriage - bad sex” syndrome. It finally gets to the point where you can imagine leaving the marriage if things don’t improve. Some of you will try to find a way to satisfy your needs on your own and the lure of pornography or chat rooms is an easy choice. You begin to feel like it is your right to “feel good” and grow farther apart from your wife both physically and emotionally.
Scenario #2 – Why Can’t He Just Hold me?
Arial was an interesting and attractive 50 year old female who loved her job, her family, and her life……. Or most of it. She loves her husband but no longer feels the “URGE” she always relied on to tell her to be sexual with her husband. It had been going away for quite a while, but as long as the kids were home and they were all busy, she and her husband were able to deal with it though neither was really happy with their sex life.
After the kids left and they had more time alone, Arial found herself beginning to avoid her husband, Daniel, because he seemed to always want sex even when she just wanted to cuddle.
Daniel had always had a bit higher interest in sex but it had not been a problem until lately. Not only was Arial not feeling the urge to have sex as often as he or she wanted, when they did have sex, it was not as “good” as it once was and sometimes it even hurt if they rushed too much.
Frankly, Arial admitted that she hurried sex because nothing seemed to turn her on anymore and she just wanted to “get it over with”. She and Daniel were not unwilling to try new things and had even bought some toys but it just didn’t seem to matter, Arial didn’t have an orgasm and Daniel kept trying to find ways to MAKE her have one. They enjoyed having oral sex but that was only as a preparation for doing “it” (intercourse) which was, in their minds, “real sex”. Very goal oriented sex was the norm and neither seemed to be aware that that was part of the problem.
They seemed to be in a cycle of her wanting to be close, him thinking this meant she wanted sex, she just wanting to be affectionate and backing away from his advances and him pursuing her even harder to show her how much he loved her.
